The Invitation

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for,
And if you dare to dream of meeting
Your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
For love,for your dream,
For the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon.
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow,
If you have been opened by life’s betrayals,
Or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain,
Mine or your own,
Without moving
To hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy,
Mine or your own,
If you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes
Without cautioning us to be careful,be realistic,
or to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true.
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself,
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.
I want to know if you can be faithless and therefore be trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty
Even when it is not pretty every day,
And if you can source your life
From its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure,
Yours and mine,
And still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes!”

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair,
Weary and bruised to the bone,
And do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you are,how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
In the center of the fire with me
And not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
From the inside
When all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
With yourself,
And if you truly like the company you keep
In the empty moments.

Take Notice

I must remember everyday:

Around us,life bursts with miracles—a glass of water,a ray of sunshine,a leaf,a caterpillar,a flower, laughter, raindrops. If you live in awareness,it is easy to see miracles everywhere. Each human being is a multiplicity of miracles. Eyes that see thousands of colors, shapes, and forms;ears that hear a bee flying or a thunderclap;a brain that ponders a speck of dust as easily as the entire cosmos;a heart that beats in rhythm with the heartbeat of all beings. When we are tired and feel discouraged by life’s daily struggles,we may not notice these miracles, but they are always there.

- Thich Nhat Hahn (found on Yum &Yuk)

My new job is splendid so far!  However,it hasn’t left me with much time for writing awesome blog posts;I promise there’ll be more original entries soon but for now I hope you get as much inspiration out of these recent quote-y posts as I do.

See your miracles.

Choose Gratitude

I don’t often watch Oprah, but a friend sent me the “Instructions on Gratitude” yesterday from her website and it’s a good reminder on why to practice gratitude even when –especially when –you don’t feel there’s much to be grateful for.

It seems like the world is going crazy right now –wars, natural disasters, violence and heartbreak.  Don’t go crazy with it.  You may not like what’s happening, but you have the power to choose how you react to it.  Whether you react with love or with hate,it does make a difference.

Whatever is given is a gift—even the most difficult experiences and traumatic events can be seen as Wake-Up calls, and therefore gifts. And the appropriate response to any gift is gratitude. In the depth of our heart,we can turn fear into courageous trust, agitation and confusion into stillness, isolation into a sense of belonging, alienation into love, and irrational reaction into Common Sense.

All gratitude expresses trust. Suspicion will not even recognize a gift as gift:who can prove that it isn’t a lure,a bribe,a trap? Gratefulness has the courage to trust and so overcomes fear. The air has been electrified by fearfulness these days,a fearfulness fostered and manipulated by politicians and the media. There lies our greatest danger:fear perpetuates violence. Mobilize the courage of your heart,as the truly awake ones are doing. Say one word today that gives a fearful person courage.

Because gratitude expresses courage,it spreads calm.

When you are grateful, your heart is open—open towards others, open for surprise. During big wake-up calls in your life,or in our collective lives,we often see remarkable examples of openness:strangers helping strangers often in heroic ways. Others turn away, isolate themselves, dare even less than at other times to look at each other. Violence begins with isolation. Break this pattern. Make contact with people whom you normally ignore—eye-contact at least—with the agent at the toll booth, the parking lot attendant, someone on the elevator. Look a stranger in the eyes today and realize that there are no strangers.

You can feel either grateful or alienated, but never both at the same time. Gratefulness drives out alienation;there is not room for both in the same heart. When you are grateful you know that you belong to a network of give-and-take and you say “yes”to that belonging. This “yes”is the essence of love.

Joy for Japan

What has happened, and is happening,in Japan makes me sick with sadness.  I’ve donated money to relief efforts and the only other thing I can do –any of us can do –is send good energy, positive thoughts and prayers for everyone affected.

In that vein, today every item that makes my heart flutter is an item from Etsy tagged with “Joy for Japan,” and 100% of the sale goes to disaster relief efforts.

[as always please click on any picture below to go to the source &purchase]

Please send good thoughts to the people and animals of Japan.

Staying Present:3 tips

I’m living in the future.

No,not “the distant future, the year 2000”where people fly around in spacecars, personal jetpacks,or teleportation (my personal favorite –I wish!  I’d go to a new country every weekend!!) and we’ve built cities in bubbles on Mars.

I’ve been living in my own future, constantly imagining what it’ll be like in my new apartment and at my new job (I just accidentally wrote “new joy”–haha great typo!!).  I think about how great it will be living on my own, playing my music in the kitchen and leaving my towel in the bathroom.  I think about how nice it’ll be working for a company that respects me and learning things I’m excited about.  I have until Monday before the new job starts and another whole week –feels like forever –until I can move into my new place.  Mentally, though,I’m already there.

But I don’t want to wish my life away.  I want to be present, right here right now.  Besides the fact that I don’t want to build up ever-dangerous expectations,I am always happier and more grounded when I live in the moment.

I can look forward to these new things and be excited about them without walking through my days with a glazed, manic look in my eye and an I’m-not-really-here half smile creeping people out.  And on the other hand,I’ve definitely had times in life where I was anxious about the future,or stuck in the past,in a bad way, with a murderous look in my eye and a much creepier half-scowl.

When you feel like you’re checked out,to a better (or worse) distant time and place, here are three ways to check back in to your present life:

1.  Allow yourself time to daydream.  Give yourself a specific period of time to imagine.  Freaked about a big change coming up?  Spend 30 minutes freaking out;scream, cry, think of all the worst things that can happen, panic,do whatever you gotta do —and then take a deep breath and put it away for the day.  In love with planning a big vacation?  Take an hour each day to research one element of it,or just to sit and fantasize.  Feel the sun on your face or the snow under your board, let the joy of it fill you,and then file it for tomorrow and let the lingering joyful feeling warm you all day.

2.  Grab a task that deserves your attention.  It’s hard to focus when you’re doing busywork or jobs that you can half-ass.  Pick up a task that you want and need to focus on;something that’s important to you and which you can really delve into.  It’ll do your brain good to switch gears, especially if you’ve been obsessing about something that’s got you feeling down.  Finishing or making progress on a difficult task will help you regain the sense of accomplishment and power that worries about the future or regrets about the past had most likely pulled out from under you.

3.  Stop.  Breathe.  Switch gears. When we’re obsessing about something,it feels like we literally are not able to think of anything else.  The thoughts, good or bad, keep sneaking on quiet little feet back into the forefront of our minds so that before we’ve even aware of it,we’re already caught up in a full-fledged daydream or panic attack.  When this happens, stop –recognize where your mind is and what you’re feeling; breathe –take a few deep breaths, slow your heart rate, clear your mind;and switch gears –consciously decide to think of something else.  It’s not easy, you have to be ever-vigilant,but you can keep this windstorm of thoughts from growing into full-fledged “tornado brain.”

Hopefully this will help you the next time you’re checked out.  I’m going to take my own advice today and quit walking around in my new apartment –I’ll be doing that soon enough.  :)

How do you stay present everyday?

Today I am so grateful &happy for a calm office.  #spreadgratitude

Callings,Challenges &Golden Helicopters

Random things I find inspiring today:

If you’re being CALLED . . . to a vocation,to a city,to a tribe, to drop-out of college, to paint your bedroom aquamarine,to dump the douchebag,to kiss the girl,to buzz your head,to skip the party,to cancel the wedding,to bat your eyelashes,to sink into that hug just a little bit longer than is socially acceptable,to hit the “snooze” button,to take the red pill AND the blue pill,to say goodbye,to make amends,to book the session,to buy the dachschund,to flip the page,to pull the escape cord,to go off-grid,to swim with the dolphins,to pawn the ring,to Tribal Scream,to launch the site,to triple your rates,to burn your business cards,to say “absolutely not,” to say “a thousand times, yes” . . .

. . . answer the damn call. You are worthy of love. And you can’t fuck it up.

 from Unicorns for Socialism

Just because the road ahead is long,is no reason to slow down. Just because there is much work to be done,is no reason to get discouraged. It is a reason to get started,to grow,to find new ways,to reach within yourself and discover strength, commitment, determination, discipline.

The road ahead is long and difficult, and filled with opportunity at every turn. Start what needs starting. Finish what needs finishing. Get on the road. Stay on the road. Get on with the work.

Right now you’re at the beginning of the journey. What a great place to be! Just imagine all the things you’ll learn, all the people you’ll meet, all the experiences you’ll have. Be thankful that the road is long and challenging, because that is where you’ll find the best that life has to offer.

by Ralph Marston, found on Happy Things

Take a moment to breathe. Put your feet up. Eat one of those tiny cups of chocolate pudding that, according to television commercials, stop time. Wherever you are in life, really, that’s where you’re supposed to be. That’s not some hippie jive talk. That is the truth. If everybody’s life unfolded according to their precious and predictable little plans, then the world would be plagued with millions of billionaire rock star-celebrity chef-novelists flying around in golden helicopters.

Life is not a linear series of events that you control. It’s not A,B,C;it’s more like A,W,5. Life is winging it. Improvising. Navigating by the stars and sailing in the general direction of the shore, knowing well between here and there is an ocean of krakens, sirens and that madman Captain Nemo.

Your plan might not be working out the way you thought it would. But the payoff is pretty good,I think. At least your life is interesting. I don’t believe in fate. I believe in atoning for your transgressions. I believe in not being a dick to other people. I believe in courage, which is the act of stuffing your fear in a basket, balancing it on your head like a Sherpa, and trudging up an impossibly tall mountain that disappears into the clouds. Many of the articles I’ve read recently accuse men of being children, and also women of being children. It’s too bad we can’t all actually be children – sharing toys, playing nice, building couch pillow forts. At least children live in the moment, their only life plan being making the most of a snow day.
