A little over a year ago,I backpacked Australia by myself.
I remember the day I committed to buying the plane ticket –how scared I was,how hard it was to part with all that money –fueled by excitement and a little terror,I clicked purchase and it was done. I was going. No matter what.
Friends thought I was crazy for leaving a steady job and traveling solo. Some were envious,yes,but the majority of people said,“I could never…”–whether it was the jobless part,the going-it-alone part,or the out-of-your-comfort-zone part,people were quick to stop themselves from even fantasizing about it.
I didn’t reserve a place to stay except for my first 3 nights (out of 4 months). I had a loose plan for traversing the continent,but very few solid bookings. I knew I had a job and a room in Perth,but I didn’t know how I was getting there from the east coast,what I was getting paid,or even what exactly I’d be doing. I hadn’t really saved all that much money and I still had to pay rent in LA. It seemed kind of impossible. I was terrified.
I went anyway. It was incredible.
Yesterday,I quit my job. There is some major restructuring in the department that promises to make an already less than fulfilling job even less fulfilling,and,very soon,redundant. It was a choice of whether to stick around and take on the stress that comes with much,much more responsibility without more compensation or guarantee of further employment,or to cut the strings early on &cut my losses. I chose the latter.
I know it’s risky. I’m not sure how I’m going to fare. But I’m tired of jobs that don’t challenge me and in which I have no potential to grow. I want a life that happily includes my job,not a life that finds me only living on the weekends.
In essence,I just bought a ticket. I’m not sure where I’m going or what it holds for me,but I took action,as terrified as I may be. I’m not listening to the people who think I’m crazy or who could never allow themselves to dream of it;I feel like it’s the right step.
If I’d never bought that ticket to Australia,I would never have experienced those four glorious months of blissful non-planning,living in the moment,wrangling the Frenchies,hiking and scuba diving and dancing and amazing friendships. I don’t know what this next step will bring,but I bet you everything that it’ll be incredible.
