It’s almost Valentine’s day,as the jeweler and florist commercials are continually reminding us,the day to tell your “special someone”that you love them. Because,of course,we need a specific day for that,it can’t just be an everyday occurrence;we need flowers and chocolate and balloons. Thanks,Hallmark.
I’m single this V-Day,as I have been for the last 6 years (cue violins…),but I don’t hate this holiday. As silly and manufactured as I think it is,I have nothing but love for a day that encourages love.
I just think we need to love outside the lines.
Why is Valentine’s day specific to couples &romantic love? Why do singles feel like they have to either ignore the holiday,defy it by going out looking H-O-T and glaring in the face of coupledom,or hunker down with a tub of ice cream a la Bridget Jones? Single doesn’t mean unloved. Single doesn’t mean incapable of love. Single is just…single.
And love is just love. The most basic of human abilities. We love. We are loved. It’s as simple as that.
This Valentine’s day,no matter your romantic status,I challenge you to spread a little love. Love your friends with a giant rock-back-and-forth,long-but-not-creepy-long bear hug,love your parents with a more than perfunctory phone call (you know it’ll make their day),love the homeless guy outside CVS with a genuine hello and maybe that spare change you always tell him you don’t have. Smile at strangers,hold doors open,ask questions and really listen to the answers.
Show yourself a little love,too;be kind to yourself,turn off (or at least tone down) the negative gremlin in your head,eat something delicious,take a bubble bath. Receive the love that others are giving you –the smiles from strangers,the bear hugs from friends. It’s out there. Soak it up.
Valentine’s Day is not just for the couple in the matching red and black outfits who sit on the same side of the booth at restaurants anymore. It’s an equal opportunity holiday. Love doesn’t discriminate;it gets all up in your heart and boogies like a bandit &then hugs your face off,no matter who you are. Love is rad.
