Turkey,Toilets &Tiny Moments

When was the last time you said, out loud, something you were grateful for?

Let me guess.  It probably involved some stuffing,a little cranberry sauce, maybe some green bean casserole (drooool…),and you probably said something true but somewhat cliche like “I’m thankful for the whole family being together and healthy,”more because that’s what you’re supposed to say than because you were really feeling it.

Am I close?

When was the last time you felt gratitude?  Did you recognize it?

Maybe you were outside running an errand, stressbuckets, and the sun was shining and, just for a second, you appreciated how good that warm sun felt.  Maybe you had a long, terrible day at work, came home, opened a bottle of wine and snuggled into the couch, savoring your first relaxing sip for a moment before zoning out in front of “Millionaire Matchmaker.”  (No?  Just me?)  Maybe  you caught your favorite song on the radio,or found a cheap gas station,or had a particularly satisfying yawn/stretch combo.

The point is,our days are filled with millions of little things that make us feel good for just a second. Millions of little things to be grateful for.  But we forget about them.  We move right through them to the next thing to get done and problem to solve.  We’re busy people,I get it;there will always be to do lists and clogged toilets and bosses who don’t sleep.

BUT.  What if we start looking for those little moments of joy?  What if we start noticing them, savoring them, remembering them, and saying thank you for them?  Those millions of tiny moments would add up into what might just turn out to be a memorably good day.

I challenge you, this week,to recognize your little moments of joy and, when they happen, pause and say thank you for them. You can thank God,the Universe, yourself, your cat,no one in particular,it doesn’t matter –just appreciate the good stuff.  I bet you’ll find yourself holding onto more of the good &less of the bad if you do.

Even better, comment here or tweet me your little moments –say them out loud!  Gratitude is not just for Thanksgiving anymore;let’s spread it around like melty butter on cornbread.  Mmmm…

What little moments of joy are you grateful for today?

Today I am so grateful and happy for:
~tiny squares of chocolate that melt on my tongue
~opening the windows in my office
 ~a rosy sunrise
